Rio Tinto in Canada: Growth and decarbonisation
Meet Jérôme Pécresse, global Chief Executive of Rio Tinto Aluminium in Montreal since late October 2023, who will explore the critical role Rio Tinto plays globally in the energy transition to a sustainable future and the decarbonisation of its production processes. The world is looking for cleaner, more efficient energy solutions, and the demand for lightweight, sustainable materials such as aluminum has become paramount. He will look at the innovative processes and technologies used to reduce the company's environmental footprint and propose some solutions on how Rio Tinto can continue to grow, in Canada and around the world, while reducing its emissions. Finally, he will discuss how our industry can help Quebec achieve its ambitions in terms of industrial and energy development. Firmly rooted in our communities, Rio Tinto is the largest industrial employer in Quebec and intends to continue investing there.

Jérôme was appointed Chief Executive, Rio Tinto Aluminium, based in Montreal, in October 2023.
Jérôme is committed to the energy transition. His early months with Rio Tinto have been focused on getting to know the business, with an emphasis on decarbonizing the company’s aluminium operations while growing the business to support new material needs for the future. Building a strong work culture around diversity and entrepreneurship and forging strong partnerships with First Nations and Indigenous peoples, communities, and governments, are fundamental to his approach.
Prior to joining RioTinto, Jérôme was, since 2015, President & CEO of General Electric (GE) Renewable Energy, a global leader in the production of equipment for onshore & offshore wind, hydropower and the electricity grid, where he helped define and implement GE’s strategy to support the decarbonization of the energy sector.
He brings a wealth of global experience, primarily in energy, mining, business development and strategy from his previous roles at GE, Alstom and Imerys, ideal for shaping Rio Tinto’s industry leading aluminium business for a low carbon future.
Jérôme is a French national, he started his career at Crédit Suisse First Boston and is a graduate from Ecole Polytechnique and Ecole Nationale des Ponts et Chaussées.
