Panel: Noteworthy projects in the era of ESG

Developing capacity-building projects for a sustainable future.

The three members of this panel will discuss innovations for a sustainable future in the context of ESG. They will share their experiences and their views on the challenges and opportunities involved in designing and developing sustainable projects. Their discussion will cover subjects such as:

  • transitioning to environmentally-friendly practices;
  • incorporating ESG considerations beyond investment, procurement, design and construction processes to achieve a degree of sustainability;
  • taking actions to reduce the carbon impact of structures.

This panel discussion is a unique opportunity to learn more about emerging trends and views on sustainable governance and find out how Canadian companies can contribute to a greener and more inclusive future for the benefit of society.

Biography

Marie-Claude Dumas

Marie-Claude Dumas is President and CEO of WSP Canada. After gaining a multidisciplinary background in global companies, she joined WSP in January 2020 as Global Director, Major Projects and Programs and Market Lead for Quebec.  
An engineer by training, Marie-Claude has extensive experience in the consulting and construction industries, more specifically in the clean energy, natural resources, transportation and infrastructure, building, earth sciences and environmental sectors, as well as in the management of major projects both in Canada and abroad.    
Throughout her career, Marie-Claude has been instrumental in creating and implementing business unit development strategies in high-growth markets. She also implemented innovative account management and communication practices for many international projects, enabling their execution to the highest standards.  
As President and CEO of WSP Canada, Marie-Claude Dumas leads a growing organization.  Surrounded by a passionate team, she is leading a transformation to consolidate WSP's position as the undisputed industry leader, focusing on its people, health and safety, ethics and integrity, and inclusion and diversity.

 

Annie Houle

Annie Houle joined Ivanhoé Cambridge in April 2022 as Head of Canada. In this role, she oversees all investments in this territory and is responsible for improving the property value chain and elevating the approach to asset management in Canada. 
Ms. Houle was previously Managing Director at Caisse the dépôt et placement du Québec’s (CDPQ) private equity team. In that capacity, she was involved in all areas of the investment process and post-investment management. She also sat on various company Boards of Directors.
Before joining CDPQ, Ms. Houle worked for more than 15 years in global banking and capital markets, where she worked with large Quebec-based companies, in a wide range of industries, achieve their growth plan strategy, whether locally or globally. She held various positions at HSBC Bank Canada, where she built the corporate banking team in Montreal.
Ms. Houle holds an honours BA in economics from the Université de Montréal and an MSc in international accounting and finance from the London School of Economics. She is member of the Ordre des comptables professionnels agréés du Québec (CPA, CGA) and a CFA chartholder. She sits on the board of directors of The Canadien Club of Montreal.

 

Marie-Claude Houle

A recipient of a civil engineering degree at Laval University in 1986 and an MBA, Marie-Claude Houle has been President and CEO of EBC since 1999. 
When she finished her studies, Marie-Claude Houle began her career in the family business that her father Fernand Houle and uncle Germain Houle founded in 1968. She began as project manager in the Building Division. Upon receiving her MBA, she became Quality Director where she made her mark implementing a quality management system at EBC. She then held the position of Assistant to the Vice President of Construction, then Project Director, Building Division, and finally, President and CEO of the company in 1999. 
Recognized for her team spirit and commitment, Ms. Houle is deeply involved in her industry and the community. She serves on several Boards of Directors and supports social causes including the United Way, the Red Cross, HealthPartners, and Le Chaînon. 
She made history by becoming the first woman elected president of the Association des constructeurs de routes et grands travaux du Québec (ACRGTQ) in 2018.
As President, she galvanizes her team and creates wealth. Her passion for her work and her desire to surpass herself rubs off on the more than 1600 jobsite workers and office employees. Her humanity and determination inspire her peers and employees. 
Ms. Houle has been instrumental in driving the company forward. Since she assumed the leadership of the company in 1999, annual revenues have soared from $100 million to $1 billion, making EBC one of Canada’s largest construction companies, with offices in Québec City, Brossard, Montréal, Ottawa, Vancouver, and Mississauga. Among the best managed companies in Canada, EBC carries out over $1.3 billion worth of work annually.
Ms. Houle has received numerous awards, most notably the Prix Femmes d’affaires du Québec 2018 (Québec Businesswoman of the Year Award) in the Executive or Professional in a Private Company category, the Inspiration Prize from Les Elles de la construction in 2018, the Distinction of the Québec Employers Council Entrepreneurs Club in 2016, the Summa Prize from Laval University in 2010, and the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Grand Prize in the Construction category in 2008.
